Inhalt: Ziel des Kurses ist es, das Selbstvertrauen der Teilnehmenden stärken in der Anwendung der englischen Sprache in verschiedenen alltäglichen Situationen. Der Schwerpunkt, der auf Konversation, Rollenspielen und Gruppenarbeit liegt, dient dazu, die Sprachbeherrschung und gleichzeitig das Hörverständnis der Teilnehmenden zu verbessern. Das Vokabular der Teilnehmenden und die Fähigkeit sich auszudrücken soll verbessert werden durch die Simulation landläufiger Situationen, die man während eines Aufenthaltes in einem englischsprachigen Land erlebt. Inhalt: Ziel des Kurses ist der zusätzliche Aufbau von Kompetenz und Sicherheit im Gebrauch der englischen Sprache, speziell im Arbeitsbereich. Der Unterricht wird hauptsächlich auf gegenseitiger Kommunikation basieren, wodurch Teilnehmende dazu animiert werden sollen, die Sprachkenntnisse zu verwenden und zu vertiefen. Themen sind u.a. Inhalt: Ziel dieses Kurses ist es, die nötigen Kommunikationsfähigkeiten zu vermitteln um im ingenieurswissenschaftlichen Umfeld bestehen zu können. Das in diesem Kurs vermittelte Vokabular ist hilfreich für alle ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen wie z.B. Maschinenbau, Elektrotechnik, Bauingenieurwesen usw. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die Fähigkeit gelegt, technische Produkte und Prozesse zu beschreiben. Übungen umfassen unter anderem das Präsentieren neuer Produkte und das Schreiben eines technischen Berichts.

Inhalt: This course is for students at upper-intermediate level who want to refresh their general language skills. It focuses on developing fluency through speaking, expanding vocabulary, reviewing grammar topics like tenses and transitional phrases, and practicing writing through tasks related to lesson content

Modern teaching methods encourage active participation. ILIAS is used frequently for interactive activities such as forums or surveys. With the focus in class mainly on speaking, more individualised grammar, vocabulary and writing practice is done outside class.

Inhalt: This course covers the core language skills needed to successfully communicate in either technical or industrial situations. It contains speaking tasks tasks, both prepared and spontaneous, plus two written tasks and is aimed at students studying engineering or other technical fields.

•    Technical concepts are explained using motivating texts and illustrations.
•    Topics reflect up-to-date technical developments and are relevant to students’ needs.
•    Core language, particularly technical vocabulary, covers a wide range of specializations.

Although grammar is regularly featured, it is not the main focus of the course.

Inhalt: The aim of this course is to prepare students for working life by developing the skills they are likely to need. Topics include: meetings, presentations, negotiating, small talk, job applications, correspondence and teamwork.

There will be an emphasis on improving spoken English skills during in-class sessions. Students will be expected to use ILIAS to complete tasks outside class.

Inhalt: This course uses practical tasks to develop the language and communication skills needed by students and professional scientists from all disciplines. During the semester you will develop your ability to tailor your message to a specific audience. We practice writing different types of scientific texts (project summaries, reviews and abstracts) and discuss conventions for writing papers. We look at how the message changes when you speak about your project in conversation, in proposals and in short presentations. You will work on using appropriate language in different contexts which may arise in your career as a scientist.

Inhalt: This course concentrates on developing knowledge of key scientific and technical terminology. A number of general areas are explored including numbers & calculation, properties & materials and process descriptions. Participants will be expected to take an active role in the course and contribute through discussions, short presentations and problem solving sessions. As this course provides a more general introduction to vocabulary and skills used in technical and scientific fields, we recommend taking it before other courses in technical English with advanced content (e.g. B2: Engineering).

Inhalt: This dynamic course is suitable for students from any faculty who want to improve their English skills through creative teamwork in a variety of situations. It combines relevant business topics and language skills with the ability to work in teams. Participants work in groups to represent a fictional company’s management team and deal with various case studies and other realistic business scenarios. Tasks include presenting a business idea, presenting a company and its products at a trade fair, managing a crisis, handling a press conference.

Inhalt: This course aims to review the main areas of grammar in English. Patterns and rules will be highlighted and focussed practice using discussion, role play and group work will enable participants to apply the grammatical structures covered in class in realistic situations. Active involvement is encouraged - this is not a lecture!

Art des Leistungsnachweises: Passing involves completing regular homework tasks, giving a presentation and doing an ILIAS review test. Regular participation is therefore important.

 

International English Test Preparation (TOEFL, IELTS etc.)

Leistungspunkte: 2-3 ECTS

Inhalt: This course is designed to prepare students for a range of English proficiency exams, including TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge exams and other internationally recognised language tests. Through weekly meetings, participants will engage in practice activities that mirror the various sections of these exams, including reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course will focus on developing skills required for each section, with tailored exercises and mock exams to simulate real test conditions. Regular feedback will be provided to help students assess their strengths and areas for improvement.

Inhalt: This dynamic course is suitable for students from any faculty who want to improve their English skills through creative teamwork in a variety of situations. Participants work in groups to represent a fictional company’s management team and deal with various case studies and other realistic business scenarios. Tasks include presenting a business idea, presenting a company and its products at a trade fair, managing a crisis and handling a press conference. Language feedback is provided on written tasks as well as presentations and speaking tasks.

Inhalt: This course is designed to improve each student’s confidence and technical competence in using and understanding engineering terms, their context, and the methodology of engineering decision-making skills. Emphasis is placed on improving reading and listening comprehension skills, and on honing verbal skills in both technical and casual contexts.

Each participant will need to do research and explain their findings in an English only setting. Working in pairs, students will prepare and conduct several technical briefings,  and there is also ample opportunity to join in spontaneous whole-class discussions. In this way, students practice working in small teams defending their conclusions or filling in details as requested by class members.

This course is part of the Sustainable Qualification Certificate offered by FORUM.

Kursmaterialien: Materials will be distributed in class and ILIAS will be used.

Inhalt: This course is designed to prepare students for a range of English proficiency exams, including TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge exams and other internationally recognised language tests. Through weekly meetings, participants will engage in practice activities that mirror the various sections of these exams, including reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course will focus on developing skills required for each section, with tailored exercises and mock exams to simulate real test conditions. Regular feedback will be provided to help students assess their strengths and areas for improvement.

Art des Leistungsnachweises: Active participation and regular preparation are important to get the most out of this course, as ECTS points are earned through continuous assessment e.g. essay writing, reading comprehension, listening comprehension and speaking.

Inhalt: Ziel des Kurses ist es vor allem, die Sicherheit zu gewinnen in alltäglicher englischer Sprache Gespräche und schriftliche Kommunikation zu meistern. Ihr Wortschatz wird auf speziellere Themengebiete erweitert und es werden komplexere Grammatik Themen behandelt. Sie erwerben die Fähigkeit, sich spezifischer in Bezug auf alltägliche und spezielle Dinge zu äußern und Ihre Fähigkeiten in der Fremdsprache weiter zu festigen.

  • Konversation über allgemeine Themen

  • Schreiben kurzer Aufsätze

  • Leseübungen (Kurzgeschichten)

Art des Leistungsnachweises

- Aufgaben zum Mündlichen Ausdruck z.B. Vorträge oder Gruppendiskussionen im Umfang von 10 Minuten

- Aufgaben zum Hörverstehen im Umfang von 20 Minuten.

- Aufgaben zum Leseverstehen (einschließlich sprachformbezogener Aufgaben) von 35 Minuten

- Aufgaben zur freien schriftlichen Sprachproduktion von 35 Minuten.

Diese Fertigkeiten können in sinnvollen Kombinationen miteinander verknüpft und getestet werden. Weitere Einzelheiten werden zu Beginn des Kurses bekannt gegeben.

English for Work B2

Inhalt: The aim of this course is to prepare students for working life by developing the skills they are likely to need. Topics include: meetings, presentations, negotiating, small talk, job applications, correspondence and teamwork.

There will be an emphasis on improving spoken English skills during in-class sessions. Students will be expected to use ILIAS to complete tasks outside class.

Art des Leistungsnachweises: No final exam - passing involves completing a range of tasks including short ILIAS tests, written task uploads, a mock job interview and a meeting role-play.

 

English C1/C2 Boot Camp

Aus organisatorischen Gründen werden Teilnehmer ab Niveau C1 in einem Kurs zusammengelegt.

Kursmaterialien: Materials will be distributed in class. ILIAS will be used.

Inhalt: The C1/C2 Boot Camp is currently only offered as an intensive course and is designed to get your spoken English top fit through highly interactive and focused sessions. Each class prioritises active speaking practice and the course explores a wide range of engaging topics. You will be challenged to advance your language skills by placing you in new and dynamic situations, enhancing your confidence and proficiency in discussions and presentations.

In addition to in-class activities, online materials, including ILIAS forums, are used to support your learning and practice outside of class. Boots are not required!

Art des Leistungsnachweises: No final exam. Credit points are achieved by regular attendance and completing tasks such as written assignments and forums.

NOTE: This course is one of the courses that counts towards either our UNIcert® III or UNICert® IV programme.

Inhalt: This course will be of interest to students of architecture who wish to improve their communicative ability in English with a particular emphasis on their subject area.  Materials used in the course include current literature, magazines, weblinks and video clips. Themes include the planning process, construction, building materials, project management and design.
